Sebastien Courty | Totems: A Wall's Jewellery

Fann A Porter is pleased to invite you to the opening of 'Totem: A Wall’s Jewellery', an exhibition by New York based French textile artist, Sebastien Courty on Monday, 7 January from 7 pm to 10 pm.

The exhibition will present thirteen individual hand-woven, wall-mounted textile installations represented as totems, embodying different countries with their natural and manufactured resources. The thirteen countries included in the exhibition are United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Palestine, Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, Egypt, Iraq, South Korea, South Africa, India, and Afghanistan.

“Weaving is talking.” This is the statement that underlines Sebastian Courty’s entire practice. For this exhibition, Courty does the talking through his intricately woven wall-pieces, which he calls totems and that each represents a country. Through the distribution of the threads used in the delicate and incredibly detailed pieces, Courty has chosen to visually reflect that nation’s exported materials. The artist selects countries based on the materials they export most, as an opportunity to draft a singular identity through natural resources and commercial success.

Join us for the opening reception with the artist on Monday, 7 January at 7 pm.
